Intent

The intent of our Food and Nutrition curriculum is that all pupils will be taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating.  Instilling a love of cooking that will open the door to one of the great expressions of human creativity.  Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.

Our curriculum is broad and balanced, constantly educating around positive healthy lifestyle and food choices including seasonality and the impact on the environment.  The curriculum is designed for pupils to develop and progress within five key concepts of disciplinary knowledge; nutrition and diet, science of food, food provenance, factors affecting food choice and food preparation and cooking.

In Food and Nutrition, pupils have equal access, we believe every pupil, regardless of ability or background, should expect the same quality education in every lesson taught.  Food and Nutrition is a subject that is challenging but, develops and implements a range of different disciplines including mathematics, science, PE, English, geography and art, making it accessible for all.

Food and Nutrition fosters a love of learning and high aspiration whether it is practical or theoretical work.  This equips our pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital to succeed in life.

“Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people eat together.”
