The Citizenship curriculum at Holy Cross is broad, ambitious and relevant to the lives of all pupils. Through the study of democracy, law, rights, responsibilities, justice, finance, communities and global issues, we aim to develop informed, responsible and active citizens who understand how society works and have the confidence, knowledge and skills to contribute positively to it.
Our curriculum builds progressively from an understanding of how the UK is governed and how decisions are made, towards more complex consideration of the legal system, human rights, political participation, the media, taxation, inequality and globalisation. Pupils are encouraged to question, investigate and evaluate different perspectives, developing the ability to form reasoned judgements and engage respectfully with issues that affect individuals and society. Through debate, discussion, campaigns, case studies and real-world examples, pupils develop the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to participate meaningfully in democratic life.
Citizenship is delivered fortnightly by teaching staff and provides all pupils with opportunities to understand both their rights and responsibilities. The curriculum reflects the values of our Catholic school community by encouraging pupils to recognise the dignity of others, promote justice, show respect and contribute to the common good. Pupils develop an understanding of how they can make a positive difference within their school, local community and wider society, preparing them to become active, responsible and compassionate citizens.
