“You cannot open a book without learning something.” – Confucius

All KS3 pupils are enrolled on the Accelerated Reader programme.  This helps to develop reading skills with the aim of seeing an improvement in reading age over the year.  As part of this programme, pupils complete reading assessments which provide us with their reading ages and enable us to give each pupil an individual reading target, as well as advice on the level and range of books that are suitable for them.  Pupils take regular quizzes on books they have read which show us if they understand what they are reading.  All pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 receive a library lesson once per fortnight as part of the English curriculum.

“I love that we get the opportunity to spend a lesson every fortnight in the library. It’s a great place to get lost in a book” (Emma, Holy Cross pupil in Year 9)

We recognise and reward pupil achievement with certificates and entry into a £10 token prize draw each term.  A pupil from each year is also selected weekly to choose a prize.

The biggest achievement for readers is being rewarded with the title of ‘Word Millionaire’ for reading over a million words and is celebrated for all KS3 pupils.  Last year we celebrated the achievement of 38 Word Millionaires.  We host an event in the summer term, such as a movie afternoon, to celebrate both Word Millionaires and those consistently achieving their reading targets.
