Teaching and Learning Intervention

Upon entry in Year 7, pupils sit a progress test in core subject areas.  Heads of Departments then analyse this data to identify specific pupils’ needs and how best to meet these.

Strategic intervention is delivered by core Heads of Departments through tutor time, however quality fist teaching is integral to ensuring all pupils (including SEND, DP and EAL) reach their potential.  Class teachers take responsibility for intervention in their classrooms by providing adaptive, personalised quality first teaching which meets the needs of pupils of all abilities to ensure they make accelerated progress.  This is monitored closely by Heads of Department and the Senior Leadership Team through pupils’ reports.

Reading Intervention

All Key Stage 3 pupils are tested at multiple points throughout the year using GL assessments’ NGRT test to assess and track their reading ability (specifically sentence completion, decoding and phonics awareness).  Data generated from this at the beginning of each academic year ensures pupils are categorised as a red, amber, green or blue reader based on their standardised age score.

Dependent on their reading ability, pupils receive differing waves of reading intervention.  All Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils engage with Renaissance Learnings’ Accelerated Reader programme and the majority of pupils with Bedrock Vocabulary through English lessons.  Furthermore, pupils in all years benefit from subject specialist staff who are adept at delivering reading through their respective curriculums; all teaching staff ensure that as part of their quality first teaching the reading material presented to pupils is accessible and can be engaged with fully.  Teaching staff are confident to employ a range of strategies to support struggling readers and stretch the most able.

Pupils in the red and amber reading categories benefit from a specialist Teacher of Reading Intervention who delivers one to one tuition through the Catch-Up Literacy and Abigail Steele Phonics programmes.  In addition to this, the Teacher of Reading Intervention also delivers small group tuition to amber readers focused upon fluency (specifically accuracy, automaticity, and prosody).  This bespoke intervention allows pupils to improve their reading and progress through the reading stages.

Intervention in Core Subjects

Heads of Department in the core subjects of English, Maths, RE and Science provide targeted intervention throughout the week, during tutor time.  Pupils are identified for this support by the class teacher, based on their performance in formative and summative assessments, or based on their performance towards their targets.  This intervention is specific to the needs of the pupils and targets the areas in which they require extra support.  This intervention is aimed at pupils in Years 9,10 and 11, with a particular emphasis on exam technique at Key Stage 4.
