Jacob’s county call

1 December 2021

Jacob is a safe pair of hands – he is a wicket keeper at Lancashire County Cricket Club’s Academy.

The 13-year-old plays for Horwich seconds in the Bolton League but also came through tough trials to represent his county.

“I have played cricket since I was four,” said Jacob, who also plays football for AFC Fylde. “My grandad Derek Darbyshire played for Horwich and Lancashire so I got into it through him.

“We had trials last year for Lancashire and got called back for Under 14 trials this year and thankfully I was the wicket keeper they selected.

“At the moment it’s strength and conditioning coaching but the indoor nets will start in January.

“I love being wicket keeper – you have to focus all the time and I am good at catching!

“I would love to play for my county professionally.”
