Last year’s Head Girl Mia was the main prize winner at Holy Cross Catholic High School’s Presentation of Certificates for their class of 2018.
Mia was presented with the Matthew Gibbons Memorial Award, in memory of a former pupil who died, and which is given for all-round achievement and involvement in the life of the Holy Cross community.
She received the award off Preston-born Emma Fox, CEO of The Original Factory Shop and a non-executive director at Berry Bros. and Rudd, which supplies wine to the Queen.
“Mia was involved in almost every sports team, she volunteered to look after Year Sixes at our Summer Camps, she was a Young Leader and Young Ambassador in Sport, she entered public speaking competitions, she was on the school council as well as celebrating four Grade 9s and three 8s in her GCSEs – and being Head Girl!” said head teacher Mr Gaughan.
There was also a special award to Deputy Head Boy Taylor, who didn’t have a day off school in his five years at Holy Cross – following on from a 100 per cent attendance at nursery and primary school as well.
It was an evening of celebration with Emma talking about her career to inspire last year’s leavers.
“I wasn’t the most academic, I was more creative and entrepreneurial,” said Emma. “I was also competitive and enthusiastic.
“I seized opportunities in my life but I was also prepared for them, you have to have the courage and conviction to see things through.
“Out of little grapes big things can grow.”
Eleanor won an Academic Excellence Award for her five Grade 9s in her GCSEs and three 8s while Shane picked up the male award after he celebrated three 9s and four 8s.
Outstanding Progress Awards were given up Maryann whose grades were two grades up from what was expected of her while Chris was almost three grades up.
“They both showed exceptional hard work and commitment,” said Mr Gaughan.
“We are so proud of this fantastic year group and we are sure they will go out and make the world a better place.”
