Year 7 Girls Are Rugby Champions!

Holy Cross year 7 girls rugby league team have recently been crowned Carnegie Champion Schools Winners after a fantastic finals weekend in London. The team became joint National Champions on the Saturday and paraded at Wembley Stadium before the Challenge cup final on the Sunday.
In the game, Holy Cross made an impressive start when hooker forward Stephanie Treadwell forced her way over in the right hand corner for the opening try.
And she showed that close range efforts were not her only strength when she scored the Chorley school’s second try of the game in the 13th minute. She was given the ball just inside their own half and romped 40 metres to touch down in the left hand corner.
Castleford, who had not been able to turn periods of pressure on the Holy Cross line into points, made their first impact on the score line with a try by centre Beth Conway just seconds before the halftime whistle.
Undeterred by that setback Holy Cross scored their third try of the game in the opening seconds of the second half when winger Sophie Unsworth quickly beat the Castleford cover on the outside.
The game finished in a tie with both teams sharing the title. The experience for the girls was outstanding and the weekend is one that will never be forgotten. Many of the girls have also reached finals with the local Chorley Panthers Rugby club.
As a School we are extremely proud of the girls and their achievements. They worked very hard throughout the year and their commitment to training was exceptional. With the team being as dedicated and enthusiastic as this, it is clear to see why they have progressed so well.
